German president pays historic tribute to victims massacred by Nazi bombing in Guernica

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday became the first German leader to visit Guernica, the Basque town destroyed by the Nazi Condor Legion in 1937. Joined by Spain's King Felipe VI, he honoured the hundreds of civilians killed in the attack, calling the massacre a lasting reminder of Germany’s “heavy burden of guilt”.
