After passing through San José El Hueyate and Puerto Madero, on the Chiapas coast near the Guatemala border, 83 migrants have gone missing. EL PAÍS has identified three mass disappearances between September and December 2024 with the same modus operandi: sea voyages headed north that never reach their destination. Among the victims are women and children, as well as many young men. In a territory marked by battles between organized crime groups, all signs point to human trafficking
